This will be a very brief post. As I was reading Orac's post about
Donald Trump's anti-vaccine musings, one thing kept jumping out at me. Trump kept talking about "massive shots" that kids get, going so far as to say that "tiny children are not horses". I get the impression that Trump has either never seen an actual vaccine syringe or he is so terrified of needles that when he did see one, his interpretation of reality was so warped he imagined it to be some huge monstrosity.
At any rate, I put this image together to illustrate what I think is going on in Trump's mind. Enjoy.
Oh, and as a side note, do you know how hard it is to find images of doctors practicing good hand hygiene by wearing gloves while administering a vaccine?
I like this graphic, and agree it's really hard to find a doctor wearing gloves for a vaccine injection.
ReplyDeleteProbably this is because the vast majority of the time a nurse or tech is giving the injection, and also because the NIH, WHO and various other recommending bodies specifically state that gloves are not needed for routine injections and should probably not be used so as to save resources for a time when they're actually likely to do some protecting. (Source:http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK138494/)
But they do make nice, safe looking pictures. Sorry my first comment on your blog is a bit snarky. I follow frequently and think you do good work!
No worries about the snark. I guess I know too many ID docs who always complain about the lack of gloves in pictures where needles are involved. But, if an office really needs to save on costs, I suppose I could see an argument made to save gloves for when they're really needed, if proper handwashing is used before administering the shot.
DeleteThanks for your comment and for following my posts!
He must think that he needs a whopping dose of influenza virus to mount an immune response. He doesn't. He needs the same dose of the virus that a child with a typical immune system needs. That's how these things work. All vaccines are formulated to have the least number of antigens necessary to elicit an immune response in the greatest percentage of the population. (Probably explains some of the non-responders to vaccines.) I wish more people who planned to be President would just take a sabbatical and learn some science.
